Al Jazeera is preparing to launch a French news channel based in Dakar, according to a report in Le Figaro. The broadcaster denied earlier reports it was to set up a French language channel.
The target audience of the new channel is in French speaking Africa, including the Maghreb region. This could explain why the studios for the new channels will be based in the capital city of Senegal rather than in Paris.
The new channel will be in direct competition with the French international news channel France24, which has strong distribution in French speaking Africa.
Reports of a French language news and information channel from the Doha based broadcaster surfaced earlier, but Al Jazeera denied such a project existed.
