BSkyB ends trying week on positive note with 3D sport and boost to UK film

Undimmed by the resignation of its chairmen James Murdoch, BSkyB has ended a trying week with an enhanced commitment to UK film and plans to roll out Eurosport to 3D-ready Sky homes.
The major new investment in feature-length British films for TV will have two distinct and complementary strands, namely new films for family audiences on Sky Movies and new documentary films on Sky Atlantic, which will be available exclusively for customers from 2013.
The new productions will be broadcast by Sky from 2013 and are the latest moves in the strategy announced in June 2011 by the UK pay-TV juggernaut Sky is to increase further its investment in commissioning and producing home-grown programmes to the tune of £600 million by 2014.
Sky Movies will invest over the next five years in a number of family oriented feature-length films and is also seeking submissions for further projects. The new projects will be supported by what Sky calls a commitment to increase investment in home-grown programming to an increase of more than 50% over three years. For its part, Sky Atlantic HD will spearhead a commitment to documentary films with the introduction of a new peak time strand in early 2013. Up to twelve peak time landmark documentaries will form the backbone of the new documentary slate. The ambition is for Sky Atlantic HD to become “the home of gold standard documentary films”.
Commenting on the move, BSkyB CEO Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s Chief Executive, said: "We know British programming resonates strongly with our customers so we’ve been building our capability and credibility in this area over the last couple of years. I’m very encouraged by the progress we’ve achieved so far, particularly in original comedy and drama, but we’re only at the start and we’re determined to raise our ambitions again and keep improving... we intend to green light more family films for Sky customers and help more of the best documentary makers to bring the films they most want to make to the screen. "
In the world of sport,pan-European broadcaster Eurosport will broadcast more than 100 hours of 3D action over the course of this summer’s Olympic Games and will showcase the action on Sky 3D, the UK’s first and only dedicated 3D TV channel. The channel will broadcast exclusive 3D action every day forming a mix of around 8 hours of live coverage alongside 4 additional hours of the day’s main highlights.
