The Mexican operator Cablem?s has recently digitalized its Pay-TV service in the cities of Tijuana, Cuernavaca and Ju?rez, and has already started such migration to Chihuahua and Mérida. In its second stage, in 2011, most cities where the company operates have been digitalized, according to what Cecilia Pedraza, Cablem?s CTO, told NexTV Latam. For the first stage that covers 400,000 subscriber base Evolution Digital STBs with Conax CAS were purchased.
In Cuernavaca and Tijuana, the company has a simulcast operation with Verimatrix and Conax. In Chihuahua and Mérida, migration will be carried out with Conax. In these last two cities, the digital platform might be available by December end or 2011 beginning. On the other hand, in the cities of Canc?n and Playa del Carmen, "the digital service has been available since 8 months ago in hotels and residential areas with Scientific Atlanta's technology", Pedraza commented. Next year, "solution DVB-c is expected to be implemented for residential subscribers". To such ends, the company is planning to acquire some additional 800,000 devices with Conax CAS, both for Canc?n and cities previously digitalized with that system.
The selection of Conax and Evolution Digital "stemmed from security, quality and functionality requirements needed in a market as competed as the Mexican market, higher implementation speed. This is included in our main objective of having an open platform with Digital Video Broadcasting of Conditioned Access (DVB CA) that enables us to choose from a list of STB suppliers", the executive added.
Cablem?s is the second Mexican cable operator. It also has an IPTV cable hybrid network, the first one in Latin America. As of 1Q closing, Cablem?s recorded 963,662 Pay-TV subscribers, according to information disclosed in its report issued by Televisa Group, owned by the operator.
