The Panamenian operator Cable Onda became the first operator in such country in offering the realese of a VOD movie jointly with its DVD launching. It is about a Warner Bros movie, "Sex and the City 2", the movie version of the TV series. Habitually, VOD releases must wait a couple of months to be seen, after their relases in movie theaters and DVD sale or rent.
The strategy applied by Warner is called "Day and Date" and started to be utilized in the United States in 2006 and 2007, through Comcast and Time Warner Cable operators in some localities. After several trials, Warner confirmed that the simultaneous launching not only did not affect DVD renting negatively, but also increased it. The initiative proposes clients who downloaded a movie to buy it only at some additional cost.
The proposal is staring to form part of Latin American operators' VOD offers. Cable Onda joined Cablevisi?n Mexico, VTR Chile and UNE-EPM Colombia, who have already carried out Warner's "Day and Date" launching.
On the other hand, a similar strategy was adopted by Universal Pictures, Paramount and Disney, who agreed with the Latin American aggregator and integrator DLA to shorten the release window of content over such platform on the same day of its DVD release, in some cases, and up to 30 days later in others. DLA offers its VOD service to 24 Latin American operators.
