The mobile telephony companies Personal and Tigo are planning to offer Pay-TV services in Paraguay. To such ends, both companies have confirmed that they are studying different options to launch the service in 2011. "There are different ways to offer audiovisual content and we are analyzing which is the best alternative", stated Marcelo Cataldo, Tigo's Business Development Manager for Latin America. Personal is studying "different technologies to render IPTV services, among which GPON was considered", Carlos Jenkins, Marketing Manager, confirmed NexTV Latam.
Cataldo told La Naci?n newspaper that they were working on the expansion of their networks in order to "study which other business can be carried out". However, he recognized that there was nothing concrete; therefore, he did not confirm whether the company would offer IPTV, cable or DTH services. "The idea is to work on the project this year, and to be ready to render the service some time next year". On the other hand, Jenkins told NexTV Latam that among other options, the company was also studying the possibility to utilize wireless technologies.
Tigo has recently presented its offer aimed at keeping TV rights of the Paraguayan national soccer league, which, at present, are held by Teledeportes, a company owned by Clar?n Group from Argentina. Therefore, its interest in keeping one of the main TV products becomes clear.
Both companies have already started to offer 3G unicast mobile TV services. As for Tigo, the company records cable operations in Central America (Amnet). Personal has not started to deploy ADSL or FTTH technologies in Paraguay.
