The Chilean Government accelerates DTT Bill
The Chilean Government decided to accelerate the approval of DTT Bill, which has been in Congress for two years, by qualifying as "to be passed urgently". Therefore, the initiative will necessarily be dealt with. The Government has recently renewed authorizations over a five-year term for DTT experimental broadcastings to be carried out only in the capital city of Santiago while the new legal framework is defined. In March 2011, the project might be almost fully tested.
With the new denomination, the legislative branch will have a 10-day deadline to pass the bill. "We are fulfilling our public commitment to accelerating the law approval by considering it extremely urgent because lower income Chileans who cannot afford cable or satellite digital TV cannot keep on waiting for a change in TV that started 10 years ago in the world", stated Felipe Morandé, Minister of Transport and Telecommunications.
On the other hand, the president of the Senate Commission of Transport and Telecommunications, Guido Girardi, praised the Government's considering the bill urgent and its also renewing authorizations. Likewise, Girardi committed himself to supporting the legislative errand so that "in March 2011 most part of digital TV bill is passed".
The norm will define a new legal framework for the development of regional and communitarian television, while also letting current channels deploy additional channels and content on screen. Moreover, according to what the Chilean Government informed in its web page, a maximum term will be fixed so as to replicate the current TV coverage across the whole country.
