According to the Chilean Sub Secretary of Telecommunications, Jorge Atton, channels that belong to the National Television Association will need to invest about USD 350 millions in order to implement DTT in such country. The executive pointed out that it was a preliminary figure that will be assigned mainly to the construction of the necessary digital TV broadcasting networks.
The Government has recently decreed the extension of authorizations granted to channels for DTT experimental broadcastings, which were to expire this month. Now, the Sub Secretary of Telecommunications "is assigning frequencies with the definite channel numbers, either demonstrative authorizations or others, as defined by the norm", stated Atton in statements released by La Tercera newspaper.
Therefore, channels will be able to start their investment deployment, "because they will be assigned a definite number and they will know what equipment and what type of transmitters they need to buy", Atton explained. On the other hand, the officer pointed out that digital TV bill is moving forward in Congress. According to him, this month, the Government is planning to place this initiative in the front burner. Finally, he highlighted that, with start of the transition process, the whole country is likely to rely on digital TV within eight years.
